    Sentenced to 7 years.

    I always find the American system weird. He is found guilty, sentenced to 7 years, now is free until July. Are there any restrictions on people in this inbetween phase? Is this the system in any other countries?

    Mind you one of the communist Senate candidates here has been found guilty of child abuse and kidnapping but is free and standing for election pending an appeal to the Supreme Court

    Mostly nonviolent offenders get this treatment, more so in the federal system.

    Gives them time to sort out the place and all that and cheaper as he bears the cost of showing up there.

    Yes, I think many civilised countries do it for non-violent crime. Just from a purely practical point of view it seems reasonable to give someone time to put their affairs in order before cutting them off from much of the outside world.
