Somewhere, somehow, everyone got the idea that nuclear power is the same as nuclear weapons and then...Fukishima, THANKS, Japan for building a nuclear power plant in a great location, freaked everyone out.
Admittedly, I can figure out EXACTLY what happened circa 1968 when the plant was built.
GE Engineers: OK, this location looks great, near the sea, good for thermal discharge
Young JP Power Plant Engineer 1: (Amongst themselves only): Wow, Americans know nothing about tsumami!
Young JP Power Plant Engineer 2: How can they? They come from upstate NY? There is no sea there and no earthquake!?!
Young JP Power Plant Engineer 1: Should we speak up? I mean, tell the GE Engineers why this is a really terrible nuclear power plant location?
Young JP Power Plant Engineer 2: Are you crazy? We will make them lose face and our boss will lose face! We better not say anything! Don't write this down, either!
Young JP Power Plant Engineer 1: You are right, of course. We can only hope that no tsunami ever happens! That would be disastrous!
The end.
Yep, they died, happily, before it ever happened, knowing they made the right call...

More unjustified paranoia about made-in-China backdoors.

Well said indeed.A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington said: "We oppose the generalisation of the concept of national security, distorting and smearing China's infrastructure achievements."
Spain is not reliant on the rest of Europe for their power supply. At the time of the power outage Spain was exporting power: 7.5% to Portugal, 2.57% to France, 2.09% to Morocco, 0.36% to Mallorca and 8.65% was going to hydro storage.
