Talking 20 years ago today: Berlin Wall falls

The Berlin Wall: the most recognizeable symbol of the divisions between the "East" and the "West", between the filth of communism and what was, relatively speaking, very free and open forms of government.

taken down 20 years ago today...

I wonder if this anniversary is reported on the mainland?

    ----------------------------

Berlin (dpa) - Gedenken an 20.

"The United States and Pakistan were the only two countries where more than one in five felt capitalism worked well as it stands.

The survey showed some features of socialism, such as equalizing wealth, continued to appeal to many. In 22 of the countries, a majority of people supported the idea of governments distributing wealth more evenly."

US and Pakistan - the axis of evil capitalism?

"Among former Warsaw Pact countries, the majority of Russians and Ukrainians said the break up of the Soviet Union was a bad thing."

So apparently communism wasn't as bad as we in the west are told, was it?

I don't think those systems in the CCCP were 'communist' - I've thought for a long time they were fascist. But whatever you call it those systems more or less guaranteed certain things such as housing, pensions, healthcare, jobs. The capitalist system does not and as people nowadays find themselves continualy shafted by the rulers, foolers and bankers they are going to yearn for the days of security.
Worryingly we are seeing polarisation of rich and poor, the rise of extremists and the blaming of certain groups for the worlds ills.

Currently I'm reading Human Smoke by Nicholas Baker and the similarities between the times are a touch worrying.

The survey does seem to have missed the point. I don't think the Berlin wall was just about capitalism vs socialism as an economic model. I think it was about democracy and the ability of 'the people' to choose (to travel, to elect leaders, etc) not just about mere money flows.

Indeed - I think that most people would have happily taken the comforts of socialism but with greater personal freedoms, improved environmental conditions and with the opportunity to have a few more luxuries. What they've got is a few people who have made a packet, some who have done OK and a lot who are now facing continual struggle pacified with booze, soap opera and celebrity culture.

    This won't end well.
