    Smile My Putonghua for your english

    Hi all,
    23 year old girl want to improve English oral skills...

    So many people here looking for learning Mandarin ...
    I'd like to stress the difference between Mandarin and Putonghua...
    Taiwan style-->Mandarin
    Beijing style --> Putonghua

    I passed the national putonghua proficiency test and I am familiar with putonghua (more different than Mandarin) though I am Cantonese native speaker.

    If you are interested, pls feel free to leave a msg.
    Thanks

    Don't think your definition is correct though, never heard your definition. Generally Putonghua is the same as Mandarin. Taiwanese style Mandarin is generally a bit different but mutually understandable. If english speakers mention Mandarin they mean Putonghua. Here's the definition from wiki:

    In everyday use Mandarin refers to Standard Chinese or Standard Mandarin (Putonghua / Guoyu / Huayu), which is based on the particular Mandarin dialect spoken in Beijing. Standard Mandarin functions as the official spoken language of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the official language of the Republic of China (ROC/Taiwan), and one of the four official languages of Singapore. "Chinese"—in practice Standard Mandarin—is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

    Hello

    Halo, this is Terry, a local HK Chinese. May I also join yours so that I could practise my English and Madarin. Of course, you may learn Cantonese if you want.

    err....actually .... Putonghua and Mandarin are the SAME!!

    Putonghua is just pinyin for what Chinese people call their language.

    I would be just as if Hong Kong people called Cantonese "Gongtonghua'.

    There is no difference in the lanugage, except the dialects.

    Like Gatts quoted from Wikipedia (I believe?) , both is Standard Mandarin and the official language of both China and Taiwan is "Standard Mandarin".

    So hope this clears thing up a bit for everyone.
