Apparently, if the cops loose your bail money, they'll attempt to get you to 'forgive that amount' so they don't have to give it back.

    Nice...

(And yes ... embedly has some weird problems with The Standard's layout. Mutant turtles were not involved

Wtf! So if bank staff steal money from the bank the bank would ask you to give up the money in your account to make up the shortfall?

The SCMP also ran this story in the weekend, but I cannot find it online currently for some reason.

But basically if I remember correctly the cops at first tried to have the guys whose bail money they lost sign a waiver, but once the news papers picked up on the story the started "apologising for bad communication".

But actually, they are still refusing to refund the bail money. What they have offered to do though is help the guys who lost their bail money in any legal proceedings that might be taken to cover the money.

Very bizarre, the whole handling of the incident. Even if the cops are not legally on the hook for the lost money(which I would find strange), they should have understood that it will not go down well in the media the way they tried to handle it. Obviously they should just return any bail money lost from their own budget, and then pursue legal action against the cop who stole it in the first place.
