Internet is so cheap and fast in HK.
I wish. I was paying $380 a month for fiber with PCCW when I had a 24 month contract and I'm now paying $400 without a contract. I don't need 1000m but they claim that's all that's available in my building. I have no other options as HKBB/iCable don't serve my building and I don't want to use a Smartone 5g egg thing. Oh well.

Yeah, whenever they don't have any other reasons, they upscale as excuse to give a higher price. And after 1Gbps...I was rather impressed with HKBN idea, just...2 lines of 1Gbps each! With their own separate IPs! And Casinos, and hookers!

As you live in an old building, it isn't worth the cost for other companies to upgrade the infrastructure.
It is a major reason many renters would check connections before signing up to a new place.
Limited competition results in high prices and you are effectively subsidizing my internet.

I moved late last year to a new place deemed by Netvigator to be a 'premier' location and therefore they could only offer 'premier' plans (ie 1gb but at 'premier' rates ). Luckily HKBN are also in my new building and I got a 1GB connection for $98 per month as well as free myTVSuper (I chose this over a 3m water filter) which on their website was worth $168 per month.

If going down the hkbn route, I suggest you do what i did which was to go to one of those street salesmen outside sogo/wanchai computer mall towards the end of the month and they'll cut you a good deal. I went at 8.45pm and the guy was due to knock-off at 9pm. He was desperate to make my sale so that he would get a $3k bonus that month, so he gave me the offer mentioned above.

service-wise, HKBN is noticeably slower on friday-sunday evenings, but it's 1/4 of the HKT offer. HKT also wanted to charge me $798 to move my connection from my old place. HKBN offered free installation.

Smartone also wanted to charge an installation fee and the monthly charge was also around $298.

Edit: if you dont speak canto, might be worth bringing one with you.
