In case you overlooked your own statement providing the answer. It's called 'value-based pricing'

No, but he is similarly "special".

This does not seem to be surprising anyone -- it did me.
Live and learn...and when shopping for doctors, shop carefully.

BTW: in case anyone doesnt know - you can haggle with doctors in Hong Kong
Did it very regularly for the birth of our kids. Haggled with delivery as well as with anaesthetist and saved thousands..

If the hospital was a "local" (but still private) hospital, I would very much agree and understand the sentiment.

But it isnt -- its one of the top/famous gweilo hospitals hence my surprise at the variance.

It may be the "go away" or "list" price - I've had similar experiences with specialists who usually practice at hospitals.

The 1,400 at the hospital is likely net for the doctor, while they need to pay for rent, receptionist, etc at their clinic.
