RTHK has long faced criticism from pro-establishment figures over it's news reporting since the handover. RTHK had originally wanted to be like the BBC, publicly funded but with an independent editorial policy. But under heavy criticism from the pro-establishment, RTHK has already been neutered to a large extent and is actually really mild in trying to avoid offending any side. But apparently that is not good enough, the pro-establishment wants RTHK to be like the CCTV, simply a propaganda tool of the government. The HK government can indeed do that, but don't expect RTHK to have any credibility with the people in that case.

I find it occasionally useful for revealing quotes from government officials or other higher-ups, or to see what kinds of stories or angles the government wants to see covered as compared to other media. For all the complaining about SCMP bias it has a *lot* more scope not to toe the government line than RTHK. Standard seemingly even more so.

For todays LOCAL stories 18 are about Belt and Road whole another 3 are about the Greater Bay Area.

Can reposting government scripted 'stories' be considered news? There is already a portal for government press releases.

Hopefully the BRI stories calm down after the summit. The tidal wave of those was truly ridiculous.

As for the GBA, it feels like the powers that be forget that the people they want to attract to this "international city" need visas to go there. Maybe 300k locals are going to Shenzhen every weekend and living the GBA life but there are many people who just live in and don't leave HK - except to go to places where it's easier to enter than China.

They have long stopped caring about those. I'd even go so far as saying they don't want those anymore.

My impression is they're desperate to say they're still attractive to people outside China. That's why they go out of their way not to mention how many people on the talent scheme are from the mainland and are trying hard to promote international exchanges with Belt and Road and Asean countries to make up the internationalization quotient.

They would be thrilled to get a surge of interest to claim things are better than ever - they just don't want or know how to or can't do anything that would help with that, because it would involve the difficult task of squaring the circle with all the nationalist rhetoric and policy.
