Urgent: Mazda 8- 2006 model costs

    Hi All

I live in tung chung and own a mazda 8 2006 model. The left headlight started to flicker and turn of randomly a few weeks back. This is random and it does not always happen.

I gave it to the workshop and they have quoted 2500$ for the igniter/transformer of the headlight saying that it needs to be replaced (Mitsubishi Electric W3T156716728). isnt it a bit too expensive? they said 1800$ for a used one and 2500$ for new one.

Also for front tyres (continental brand) they quoted me 1200$ for one and 2400$ for pair. is that reasonable?

    thanks for the help!

Tyres might be a bit expensive but I presume they are a fairly large size on that car. Paid 900/each for pirrellis on a VW Tiguan recently for reference (Lee Tung Tyres in Chai Wan).

Parts are expensive over here. Assuming it's the xenon headlight transformer and or ballast that is broken it is probably going to be hard to find parts cheaply. If it's flickering then it is probably that rather than the bulb (which would be far cheaper).

Seems quite pricey for what is usually an off the shelf part. That Mitsubishi model number doesnt mean anything btw, but mazda Zenon headlight igniter modules, are usually bought by the pair, and you'd expect to pay between $150 - $250USD for a pair, not one! If they're replacing both at the same time ( sensible people usually would ) then that sounds about right.

they have opened up the car and seems like they are charging a lot
how shall I now safely get my car back without them intentionally breaking anything

    1200 for tyres and 2500 for 1 transformer/igniter

1200 for a tire isn't too bad depending on the size. You can check here.

    That's a pretty hefty price
Last month I changed 2 tyres (Dunlop 225/45R17) on my BMW 330 in Yuen Long, cost me HK$ 1,600.00

Factor in the trouble of getting it back and finding a new place... time/trouble to save x$$s... maybe suck it up and ask here first before going to a mechanic next time?

a standard mechanic will use specialist tyre place and mark up price, lots of tyre shops around to compare, make sure they have the tyre in stock
