Redecorate a small room with Vantablack paint - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vantablack and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCI2KYhC8vk - which will allow you to ponder upon the sounds you hear with no visual distractions. (If you own your accommodation, that is.)

NT is definitely quieter than the more dense and busy districts of HK, but even on the 10th floor,
and with well-sealed doors and windows those shrill, small breed dogs’ bark is hard to ignore. I usually have music on of some sort, at a decent volume. That helps a lot…except when it doesn’t!

A pub. A pint. Headphones. Heaven.

Coolest thing I've read on here for a while.

I've read about that place and wished I could have experienced it.

My place at night can get quiet (at the moment I can hear someone playing mahjong in the distance), maybe about 35 dBA iirc. My network cabinet has a slow speed fan in it, so there's always noise from that.

I've used earplugs around HK for years. Never got an ear infection like the OP, surely something is going wrong there. Flents foam earplugs, some small amount of money for a box of 50 pairs.
