As you may know from these threads on this forum, the demand for appointment booking is that high that the slots are always regularly fully booked.
I suggest you either keep refreshing your browser or view availability in the morning as they normally release dates the next working day - HK time.
Saying from personal experience, your best bet would be to check in the morning on weekdays.

    Many thanks @BritishRose!

Can you or anyone explain quite what’s meant by “appointment booking period for application of Hong Kong identity card at Registration of Persons Offices is 96 working days”, please….?

Does this mean one can only book an appointment for 96 business days in advance (as opposed to say a few weeks - 96BD is about 5 months)?

Yes that is correct. It used to be less than that (can't remember how many days) - but because of the demand in appointment bookings, Immigration decided to extend it.
This means you can now book your appointment within 96 days in advance.
Just to make you aware though that they will only replace your HKID card during the extended hours, so after office hours basically as they are currently working until 10pm on weekdays.
