    China Bullet Train Derails

Well, the news is going from bad to worse for China's vaunted bullet trains. I rode the one from Hangzhou to Shanghai a few months ago, despite hearing all the rumours of corruption and mismanagement. After last week's breakdown, I wasn't sure I would make that choice next time. Now this...

Hmm, not much information to be found. Were there any passengers on that train?

yes. it is a passenger train. 6 cars were derailed. 11 dead so far.
The first train lost power due to lightning. Then came the second train.

That is incredible. You would think they had a fail safe computer system for this.

The Guardian: China train crash kills 32

Another 200 people have been taken to hospital following the accident which occurred after the first train lost power due to a lightning strike and was then hit from the back by another bullet train following it, according to state television......The total power failure rendered useless an electronic safety system designed to warn following trains of stalled trains on the tracks and automatically halt them before a collision can occur.
If there was a total power failure, why didn't the second train also stop?

There is corruption and incompetence in every country and sometimes it causes deadly accidents. I bet if the same accident had happened in the US, a certain someone wouldn't have made a thread out of it...
