I am in the market for a pair of floor standing speakers and went to 3 of the shops there last Monday. My budget is around the $12-15,000 area and I was made to feel a pauper in all of them!

The Tannoys that consistently win the WhatHiFi awards are not available in HK. The Castles (4 and 5)I havnt listened to yet, but gather they may be a bit "soft" for a good home theatre system.

Any suggestions for a non back ported speaker appreciated.

    Room size around 16*13.

Was also told, but can't confirm, that a lot of the Mongkok shops do not show prices. When asked the reply is " what can you pay?'.

Serious caveat emptor here if that is the case.Do your homework!

probably bower & wilkins 684 fits your requirements, finesse and musical fidelity, yet sound is on a large scale

The 684's look great, and are a perfect size, in between the Castle 4, a little small, and the 5's, a bit big for a medium room.

    I will definitely audition them.
    Thanks for the reco.

usually, the big 4 uk speaker manufacturers are good and rarely make a dud product, ie, tannoy, mission (probably better for home cinema than hifi, unless the high end ones), B & W and KEF, but others such as Acoustic energy are also good.

Always been a fan of B&W...I had a full surround set of the 600S3 series and a REL sub back home. Now I have the MT-1 system given space constraints here, both setups excellent.

A few decades ago Hong Kong was FULL with street level audio shops. Nowadays there are far less and most are not on street level anymore.

What I suggest is to get one of those local high end audio magazines and check the ads. Many of the audio shops are now on the 10/F of some buildings, often in Mongkok, but can be all over Hong Kong.

Have you checked those shops that sell Tannoy?
