    3D - Printing

I want to learn about 3D - Printing. I think I can use it in my field but I need to learn more.

I need to learn how much it costs, where I can get it. How much does the printing material cost, where do we get that?

Which is the best company to buy it from, I'm also nervous about the company going bust and no after-sales service?

    Where to start?

The China ones are quite expensive. Those dudes wanted to get one out early last year.... but still keep postponing...:

Last week I saw another HK based one which looked quite good. They don't have a webpage, buy you can ask [email protected] about the status. They ask for US$399

I saw a demo with PLA and the print quality was impressive.

http://hkmakerfaire.wordpress.com/call-for-makers/ had some 3d printer guys, look down the list perhaps. Jon the guy behind Makibox is pretty cool so you could try reaching out to them. See http://makibox.com/forum/topic/1843 for more on trials and tribulations of 3d printing. Or head over to http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/DimSumLabs and ask around there.

Edit: cost of material we were told at the maker faire was 300 HKD a kilo. Printers ranged from around 1000 HKD to 9000 HKD for the imported one from Europe.

Both are cheap for a reason. You get what you pay for.
Yeah agreed Makibox is pretty entry level, and the kickstarter item is interesting to me mainly for the clever design. They get the press because they're entry level and not professional grade I guess.

Interesting I just spotted this conference next week in S'pore if anyone's more serious:

someone gave me a printed bottle opener. looks sturdy enough for regular use. they also designed and printed out iPhone covers, key chains, etc. pretty sure it's going to replace a big portion of traditional productions.

I just had a few quotes for a prototype of a small plastic tile...cheapest was $3000HKD

I'm probably going to just crack on and get a plastic injection mould made for $10000HKD...

Certainly not. A small 3D print can take a few hours. Some of the larger prints I saw take well over 24 hours. 3D print is not designed to replace traditional productions. It can't compete in quality, price and speed.

Hopefully they will be able to print 3D village houses soon.
