Many of the comments following the initial piece fall into the usual positions

The Islands are Chinese - look at a map the are close to China
    - But they are actually nearer Japan
They have been mentioned in Chinese text for a long time
    - They have also been mentioned in Japanese, Indigenous Taiwanese and Dutch texts
Japan stole the islands from China
-some would say evidence seems to point that the annexed un-inhabited land
Japan did terrible things during the war
    - Oh dear, is there an equivalent of Godwin's law for East Asia?

Well written and interesting article. I like the way the ADIZ is explained rationally instead of being fear monger sensationalized.

In my opinion, this basic cause of all this turmoil is US weapons sales to Japan. The spending must be getting outrageous. The anti missile missiles to defend against North Korea missiles, Naval exercises, and now the land based antiship missile installations and F15's involved in this dispute. The Japanese authorities must keep the Japanese people convinced of the necessity of the weapons programs, but without damaging trade and getting into an actual war with China. The US is very good at putting it's trading partners on a tightrope.

Oh dear! A variation on Godwin's law. At the slightest disagreement on any other viewpoint no matter how interesting or true challenging the view that Chinese Government is anything less than pure evil just invoke the wumao fantasy. Sheesh!

The US government is really at the mercy of the arms industry. Foreign policy is guided by those who seek enemies and for well over half a century those who engage in this industry have caused death and misery to millions.

Ouwen is right about keeping partners on a tightrope and may I add invoking the bogeyman so that these weapons can be used otherwise the industry will just die down.

There is a reason in this world for terrorism and conflicts but the answers cannot be found looking down the barrel of a gun

There are surely subtle differences between someone linking a topic to an evil dictator from the middle of the last century and people highlighting the un-canny ability of some posters to follow the dogma of the wumao rules. No doubt both have links to totalitarian regimes that have slaughtered millions but that isn't really the key ingredient for invoking a rule set. It seems more appropriate to have a comparable Godwin's law for people who introduce Japan's actions actions in the middle of the last century into contemporary topics.

Yes beautifully worded old boy. That would put the natives back in their place, what eh?

Really, the principle is the same. Whenever someone comes up with a counter argument that remotely oppposes your view of China then trot out the lazy tired ad nauseum about them being paid by the CCP.
    Every debate ends like this.

China civil law which is based on the German BGB says if part of a private property is accessible and used over a long time by the public without objection of the property owner (e.g. a public hiking path crossing the forest on private land), the property owner forfeits the right to restrict access to that area (German: "Gewohnheitsrecht" ) . Them Chicomms didn't give a rats butt about blue water and the Senkakus for more than half a century. Even if that area was theirs, according to their own law, it's gone. Dumb Chicomms

Whenever someone comes up with a counter argument that remotely is critical of your view of China then you and one or two others trot out the lazy tired ad nauseum tactics of derailing the thread so that it is about America, that foreigners should not impose their values on the Chinese, that China is changing and is not the China of the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s, that corruption is just a small number of local government officials and so on.
