in regards to the valve amps or solid state, valve amplifiers are traditionally good for acoustical or classical bases music or vocally based music ( hence, why locals love valves amps, due to their taste in music, ie, Teresa deng, etc, but most major audio manufacturer Japanese, us or European use solid state amps as they suit more lively type music)
Imparanoic, let me first say that I have seen some of your posts on here and I believe on Headfi as well. You certainly know your audio and I respect your comments.

If you were to ask me what I am looking for prior to the HD800, I would have said exactly what you said above because I mainly listened to EDM music. But since getting the HD800, they make you want to listen to so many different types of music, some of which are along the lines of the acoustical/classical/vocal based music.

Will continue in a few minutes. I need to attend to some students now.

The Onkyo package looks a killer for the price.

Totally agree with you. Coincidentally, the used receiver/speaker package that I missed out on included an Onkyo receiver. Although it was a very good one in its time, technology has changed quite a bit since seven years ago. So this helps in getting over that missed deal a bit.
Can I pay a bit to change/upgrade pieces in that package?

This is a good summary. I bought my current DAC and integrated amp from one of the stores in Grand Castle Commercial Centre. There was one store that had quite a lot of different speakers in it. I was afraid to poke around because I had not done any research on speakers yet so none of the names would have been familiar to me at all.

Ideally I would like to buy everything from one store to max out on any discount.

imparanoic, you've got me hooked on this yahoo auctions thing. I never knew about it until now. My problem is that I cannot read Chinese so I have to rely on Google translate, which can be kind of risky sometimes.

That Mission speaker system looks like a very good package. I also noticed that the upgraded package include the Onkyo 616 receiver. I remember coming across a review of many receivers and it listed that the 616 was the only one that had a phono input. I asked this question earlier but does this mean that I can connect a turntable directly into this receiver without the cartridge amp? The other problem is when you try to compare prices to US regional deals. Electronics are so cheap in the US.

I came across this particular vendor on yahoo auctions. They are located in Kwun Tong. What do you think of their bookshelf speakers?

Link doesn't seem to work. The name of the vendor is YS Audio Sunrise.

So anyone on geo that actually sport a REAL hifi sound system? Like MBL, Reference line of B&W, Martin Logan or similar?

Myself I'm on a mid-ish equipment, total cost around 100k:

    Dali Mentor 8 front speakers
    Dali Vokal Center
    Random stuff for surround
No subwoofer, try to spare the neighbours

And then NAD M15 pre-amp and NAD M25 amp.

if it has phono, u can use a record player, check if it''s moving magnet or moving coil, some record players have both, some only one or the other (not my generation though, my first record purchase was only 2008 as part of limited edition cd/record package)

I registered a Yahoo email account to try out this Yahoo Auctions thing. I thought I authenticated my account/phone number to transact on YA when they sent a SMS message with a code, which I entered while signed in under my account. When I try to "Agree" to the policies and rules of the auction, nothing happens when I click on the left sided icon that has been translated to "Determine". How do I get past this stage?

no need to bid ( yahoo auction is there for advertising), just call Ringo Lam of Soundex ( official distributor of HK) to if they have stock, go to his office ( not much of showroom), arrange a van and check the goods, as usual has full warranty, then move stuff to van to take home
