Yes, I agree that Portugal aren't a great side, but on paper they should be better than the US. Ghana should be better than the US too. So it's job very well done to get out of that group!

Pre tournament did you have the US coming out of that group? Not many did.

Portugal are a decent team. On paper, they have better players than maybe half of the teams who actually did get through (including the USA). If this world cup has taught us anything, it's the value of having a cohesive team.

That's why France are doing remarkably well - they have one or two good players, rest average, and left one or two others at home because of their egos. The matches I've seen I've been very impressed with the team's work rate.

Portugal and England demonstrate having a few good players simply doesn't cut it anymore. That England Italy game still rankles. Rooney murdered Baines all game - Baines had to fend off two Italians every time whilst Rooney stood hands on hips.

Agreed. And they did it without their best player.

Unlike most of the teams in the World Cup... soccer is like the 4th or 5th sport in the country. If you are a good athlete growing up in the US... you are likely pushed towards Baseball, Basketball or US football.

In most countries a championship/cup where teams of only one nation compete in, like the NBA, is not called a 'World Series' and the winners are not 'World Champions'.

The champions of overwhelmingly British sports like conkers or cheese rolling or bog snorkelling make no claim to be world champions based purely on the assumption that no one conkers, bogsnorkels or cheeserolls quite as well as the Brits.

BTW, the US actually does have a team that really have been world champions several times - the women's national soccer team.
