No but they did win a European Championship which most people believe to be more difficult to win given the strength of the teams involved.

Spain did help them by not turning up for one game though.

Hard to say. Looks like it could be although we now know it wasnt but it didn't matter anyway as we won by 2 clear goals

What goes around comes around in any case.

Great link Trebor :-) That Russian Linesman was Germany's public enemy for a long long time :-)

    Edit: 2nd clip

One could even make the case Russia played to a draw in the Ukraine conflict.

Since the break up of the USSR, the Russian hockey team has been among the better teams in the world but hasn't reached anywhere the level of domination of those old Soviet teams. In fact, playing as Russia, the hockey team has only won a silver and a bronze in 20 years. That it! The tiny country of Finland (<5 million people) has surpassed their Olympic haul with a silver and four bronze since 1994 (only missing out on the a medal once in that time!). In that same time period, Sweden has two gold and a silver.

It's time the world lets go of past USSR hockey glory and judge the modern Russian team for what it is and what it's accomplished.

Okay, back to World Cup lest Joe start a thread about post-Soviet winter Olympic sports played on ice.

Have to go with the Euro countries over the African nations in todays match ups. Too bad as the world is more interesting with a team called the Super Eagles still in contention.
