    Which wifi router?

We closing in on an ISP and a streaming box, but we'll need a wifi router, which we know fuck all about.

It will serve a streaming box, along with a Mac laptop (on occasion), a Dell laptop, an iPhone (on occasion), an iPad (on a rare occasion), and a Blackberry (on occasion).

The most important would be the streaming box and the Dell, but it would have to be able to be set up with the Mac as the Dell tends to travel. Would an Airport Extreme work with everything?

It doesn't have to be the cheapest option out there, we'd rather spend a few extra $$ for what's right and what's reliable.

Can some of you tech-savvy bods help?

    Budget?

I know you said you don't mind spending dolla, but rough budget idea?

Personally I've been very happy with the Asus range of routers, but they cost from HK$500 up to HK$2k+, so rough budget would be useful.

I am using the RT-N66U, which is now probably a bit dated, but is freaking great.

    This is what I have

    ASUS RT-AC68U - Router 路由器 - 網絡 - 電腦 - 香港格價網 Price.com.hk

It handles my PCCW 1000M connection with ease, streaming is fine

I have the very cheapest TP-Link and it works well. Was a bit over HK$100.

Well an Airport Extreme is $1500 so we're comfortable with a budget up to that.

I've got the older model of the one Rob2020 has, the RT-AC66U, and I think it's probably overkill for most people...

Unless you have at least 2 of:

    • 300+M Fibre
    • Gigabit ethernet
    • 802.11ac clients

or assume you'll be upgrading relatively soon, you're wasting your money getting such a high-end router.

You'd probably be absolutely fine going with, if not the very cheapest router, something closer to $300 than $1500.

I've got the A2004NS, and it does its job, got it on sale for a few hundred bucks.

I've heard wonders about the Asus ones, and if I was to change my router, it'll probably be to one of those.

Do they have to have the 'spikes'?

I have the ASUS RT-AC68U too after signing up with HKBN 1000M fiber. It is pricey compared to basic routers, but it has been solid in terms of speed and signal strength.
