Putting the shoe on the other foot, imagine what it would be like having your wife track your spending. Not necessarily a bad thing, but ideally it should be something that, if necessary, works for both of you.

As Morrison says, it ultimately comes down to sharing the same mindset or at least having mindsets that don't conflict. In my own limited experience, this seems critical to any hope of retiring early and comes before any discussion of investment strategies etc.

That said, if you can earn enough to support a free-spending spouse (and some people do), more strength to you.

Yep, that's certainly my experience and I fear for those who are unequally yoked in terms of financial mindset. Must be hard on both sides, I reckon.

Numerical cognition, that's another reason to track expenses diligently.

Work: get up on a cold miserable UK morning, hour commute, work all day, hour commute home.

Early retirement: get up when I wake up, leave home at 10 am to take kids to beach, swim in 30 degree plus water, massage on beach, get home at 10pm.

Tomorrow go to water park for the day.

Tough choice but I think early retirement was the right choice

I am not sure if this has ever been posted, but If anyone hasn't read The Richest Man In Babylon I highly recommend you do, it offers some great insight into building and maintaining wealth. Some of it may seem like common sense, but so few practice it.
