You're pretty naive to think that any Beijing-backed CE would "instantly quell" local opposition. As long as Beijing has the power to "appoint" the next CE and one more election goes by without true universal suffrage for Hong Kong, localists will not be silent.

The bigger issue is the current administration gave the option of faux democracy and stated it met the requirements of universal suffrage so no more changes would be required. IF there was a pathway to a more representative government in Hong Kong under one country two systems much of the anger would dissipate.

Unfortunately President Xi seems more interested in developing a cult of Xi rather than tackling the underlying issues in society. Until President Xi leaves office (if?) there is not much hope for the two systems part only one country.

Who the CE is unfortunately will be irrelevant. Hopefully they choose someone less aggressive this time and one that will push some local reform to make society more equitable.

I agree 100%, core leader, censorship of the net and films, jailing activist lawyers, occupying south china sea, and the latest, pushing mainland universities to be ideologically correct:

Only a moron would "believe" that a Beijing-appointed CE would "instantly quell the nascent localism support", when the whole point of localism is to preserve the region's autonomy. The Hong Kong people want democracy and self-determination, not your idea of a "credible CEO looking out for Hong Kong" appointed by Beijing. Hong Kongers will not be placated or patronized by yet another Beijing puppet, they want true universal suffrage. Where the hell have you been these past few years? "Nobody believes that HK independence is a viable option"? Really now? That's why they had a pro-independence protest just a few months ago right? Are you making things up?

Until you stop mistaking your own opinion for the truth, feel free to keep me on that ignore list - it doesn't justify your opinion, it just shows how petty you are. Of all the things you could've learned in Hong Kong, it looks like you chose to learn how to save face. Pathetic.

Wow ... Isn't Stephen Vines in the F&B business? Extremely gutsy for him to use the language he has used, given the nature of that business.

A pretty rare feature to have guts and a backbone in this town, one filled with so many shoe shiners.

    I like Stephens honesty.

    Tips hat in respect.
