    EDB NET Scheme

    Hi

I have applied for the NET Scheme and would like to do some research on government schools, just in case I am successful in getting selected for the pool of teachers. Can anyone give me any advice on how to find out more about individual schools, bearing in mind that any info I read would have to be in English? I do not know Hong Kong at all (but am keen to get to know it, obviously), so could anyone advise which might be good areas to teach in, and which not? If anyone could help out with any information at all I would be really grateful. Thanks.

Thanks for replying. I'd be going as a single female so I'm looking for somewhere safe. I'd want a few expats around. Don't particularly want to go to an industrial area. I obviously need to read up on Hong Kong, so could anyone recommend a reliable guide? I'm really at the very beginning of the research stage to see if this is for me.

Older industrial area. Although with a lot of new A grade offices moving out there it is slowly changing with new restaurants, bars and shops. I know a few teachers living in that area.

You used the word 'government'. There aren't that many government schools per se. They are very well regarded by NETS and experienced NETS tend to get those jobs. We also don't know if you are applying for a primary or secondary position, a special needs position, etc. There just isn't enough information in your profile to match you to an ideal school + location. Just being dead honest.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I've applied for Primary and Secondary. I have never worked in HK but am a very experienced teacher. I don't yet know if I've been accepted, but am doing research now, just in case.

Personal safety is seriously not an issue in any district.

Assuming you are accepted in the EdB NET scheme - specially the secondary one - the issue to watch for will not be the district, but the band of the school. Band 1 having generally the most academically able students, with Band 3 at the bottom. Even so, as an experienced teacher you will already be aware that the principal and the school board set the tone of the school a lot more than the type of students.

The other thing to consider in moving to Hong Kong is that you can't afford to be too fussy about the first job you accept; you need to establish local street-cred so to speak. It's an employers' market here, so if you can show you've got the goods by handling a less desirable position in your first year, it will be very helpful for getting you a better post subsequently.

And don't restrict your horizon to the EdB NET scheme - there are also some DSS (direct subsidy) schools which also offer competitive packages. There are also a few international schools which employ specialist NETs - they're not the "top of the tree" ones, but they do pay a living wage while you find your feet here.

    Hi

I too have applied but not heard anything. If you do hear back could you reply to advise? Would be good to know when they are interviewing etc.

Regarding living in HK it is very safe anywhere and most places are easily accessible from one another. You are best waiting to find the school first and then consider location 2nd. The EDB provide a very generous housing allowance so you should be fine on that front.

It is not a housing allowance and is fully taxed.
Most schools start interviewing in May and there is a bump of jobs/interviews in late July/early August. Few (lfewer than 10%) offer any type of interview prior to late April.
