MTR - continuing construction problems and defects

    https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/...re-second-case
the public only knew about sinking problems at the viaduct pier of Yuen Long station, involving the same developer, after a media exposé last month – even though the incident happened five years ago.
Sun Hung Kai Properties later confirmed its building work at the station had been suspended at the request of the MTR Corp due to sinking problems.
Hong Kong Federation of Railway Trade Unions vice-chairman Tam Kin-chiu weighed in, saying the MTR Corp should not have kept light rail staff in the dark about the problems at Tin Wing. About six months ago light rail drivers were told by MTR management to slow down from 35km/h to 15km/h when approaching Tin Wing stop platform.
Not surprised as that station is so near to the wetlands:

Reveal all MTR subsidence reports: democrats - RTHK
It has been revealed so far that the supporting pillars or platforms of a number of stations, including Tai Wai and Yuen Long, as well as Tin Wing and Tuen Mun Swimming Pool light rail stops, had sunk over 20 millimetres. This level of subsidence immediately triggers the suspension of nearby construction works.

In a statement on Monday night, the MTR Corp listed the 64 sites it was monitoring for subsidence, with the West Rail Line having the most, 15.
...two projects were temporarily suspended because ground settlement had exceeded preset limits, including a property development atop Tai Wai station, where 23mm of subsidence was detected, more than the 20mm limit for triggering a halt.
The government said that even if subsidence reached the limit of a site, it would not necessarily mean the railway facilities had become unsafe.

it seems MTR is doing a big favour by monitoring - that is their job right?

On TVB, they were showing the hand-sized cracks on some of the light rail platforms related to the subsidence. The public would probably want to know if those stations are safe and if the cracks/conditions are getting worse, but the MTR seems to be disclosing these details ever so slowly.

Light rail... this must be by far the safest flavour of public transport in Hong Hong. Slow moving, single decker, 2-3 carriage trams that for the most part run at street level.

Trading in MTR has been halted at 1pm pending an announcement, maybe something big has gone wrong.

even impacts with car is relatively minor incidents, there may have been a high speed car serious one in the past
