That relates to getting a direct issue of a HK licence, rather than driving here as a visitor as is the OPs issue.

No it helps: first link, first paragraph bullet point (c): you can drive as a visitor here on the strength of the overseas drivers license.

thanks all - will keep you posted!

    exactly
nice to see people actually read what is posted before shooting it down

in the 'old' days you could only drive here with an overseas licence in a hired car and not in a borrowed vehicle
    they changed that now

Apologies, I was referring to your "Not impressed by some of the countries in the list at link 2" comment which does indeed refer only to the direct issue of a Hong Kong licence. I forgot this is Geo and being anally precise is de rigueur.

Edit: pressd enter before the second point. It must have been very 'old days' because reading some appeals on this subject it has been the law since at least early 00s, probably handover era.

Not satisfied with including countries having no diplomatic relations with China.

Driving license is one matter; valid insurance is another (ie was your friend covered property?)

clearly you don’t want to perjure yourself over the facts - presume punishment for perjury equally serious in HK as in UK.
