New UK political 'party' The Independent Group

They were 7, now 8, & the rumour mill is going fullsteam ahead...

They currently have more support than the Lib Dems, not that this is much to sing about, but still they are only 2 days old.

The rest of this twitter thread points out other Tory MPs who no longer identify as Conservative - Peter Bone, Amber Rudd.

EDIT: Possibly trolling, but the new group is an interesting development.

If they can get Tories and TM loses her Con/DUP majority could get interesting. If they could get 20+ to join then even more interesting!

reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/ is an interesting if a little overwhelming place these days.

UK's electoral system strongly favours the bi-party establishment so it remains to be seen whether TIG will have any more lasting effect than any of the other minnow parties.

I personally believe that genuine consensus-based multi-party systems are generally healthier than the confrontation-based bi-party systems present in the UK and US. The latter can at times be more effective (time-share dictatorship), but the former are more likely to avoid the excesses and abuses of closed circuit one-party decision-making.

The former also gives a formal voice but not necessarily any power to the more radical in society. Both systems lead to consensus. I prefer a political system where the politicians have to compromise before going to the ballot box rather than after it.

Perhaps The Independent Group will merge with The Liberal Democrats that was created when the Social Democratic Party assimilated.

I think they need more than 20, perhaps 40.

At the moment they do not have a message apart from we are against Brexit (are they all?), not anti-semitic (though one of them described ethnic minorities as people with a funny tinge).

Opposing something is easy Not offering a viable alternative is not viable in the long term. They need a manifesto and a political philosophy they can rally around.

Is there any synergies in their constituencies?

It does feel time for fresh split in the parties but not sure where. The champagne socialists of the more affluents urban constituencies do seem a better fit for the Lib Dems.

A reminder that the UK is 5 Tory defections away from a general election. With the DUP, May now has a majority of 4.
