So what's gonna happen when Joshua Wong is arrested under the NSL? That's only a matter of when not if, at this point. Then he will be a martyr.

This may be overoptimistic, but there's a chance they hold off on actually doing this to prove how the law rarely needs to be used, is mostly a deterrent, etc. A way of responding to the foreign criticism as well without losing face (or powers) by having withdrawn it.

I hope you are right for HK's sake, but I have my doubts. Beijing is in their hardline ideological mode, where ideology trumps reason. They miscalculated by pushing this law, they will miscalculate again by arresting Wong. Xi is the hardliner who does not care about international reaction, remember?

Geo? They purport to have jurisdiction over the world, so if you publish anything in some town paper in Nebraska or something, or back of a barn for that matter, they can nab you.

Just like in China, you’re safe until you aren’t. Some posters have provided the “reassurance” anyone here is likely to be much lower down the totem pole of their hit list. They should basically be relying on self-censorship, and you might feel a lot less unsafe if you didn’t have your actual identity tied to your account...

This seems intended to create an atmosphere of fear more than anything. The text of the law requires a connection between "inciting hatred" and "foreign groups," at least. Not to say such connections couldn't be made up, but he seems to be misconstruing the contents of the text.

Of course maybe he's referring to a situation in which the mainland exercises jurisdiction, but it's hard to imagine they're going to exercise that every time someone criticizes the police. After all, they put a whole local apparatus into operation, presumably for the minor stuff.

"Luo also referred to a signature campaign by a pro-Beijing alliance last month, saying that the fact they had collected around 2.9 million signatures in eight days showed that the public wanted the national security law, and that its implementation will ensure peace and stability for the people of Hong Kong."

Witnessed this campaign first hand, pretty disgusting! They were doing the rounds around public housing estates ect giving out free masks if you signed said piece of paper, none of the ppl were reading what they were signing, instead calling family, FREE MASKS!

Methinks they won't do anything for a while, maybe a week or two or a month, until the rest of the world stops looking, and then there will be knocks at night, and several (i.e. tens) activists, journalists, politicians will be rounded up never to be seen again. The rest of the world won't really care, because they want to keep selling to China. Then it will be any (i.e. thousands) young person who ever participated in a protest, to be send to reeducation camps in the mainland.
