Cathay Flight Attendants Arrested / Charged..

Investigation revealed that the two persons, whilst employed by an airline as flight attendants, arrived in Hong Kong from the United States on December 24 and 25, 2021 respectively. During medical surveillance, they had conducted unnecessary activities in contravention of Cap. 599A on December 25 and 27, 2021 respectively. They were both subsequently tested positive for COVID-19 Omicron variant, and have been discharged from hospital upon completion of treatment.

Police arrested the two persons today for violating Section 15(3) of Cap. 599A, and laid charges on them today after seeking legal advice. They have been released on bail. The cases will be mentioned at the Tuen Mun Magistrates' Courts and the Eastern Magistrates' Courts on February 9.

Zero surprise here- they have jailed people for just breaking ordinary quarantine (like 3 weeks, not months or years) all along so they were definitely going after these people and making a huge example.

Can't really defend the quarantine violation of the Cathay flight attendants. They knew the rules but broke them anyway. Maybe they thought they would test negative. Maybe they thought there was no risk of transmission. Whichever the case, they got to face the music now.

That being said, would this not accelerate the departure of CX employees from the airline? Not that CX need any more employees given the dire situation they are in, but even so, even the limited flight operations they are in engaged now do require pilots and flight attendants. At some point, would CX find themselves with insufficient employees to maintain even the severely restricted flights they are engaged in now?

Not that the authorities would care if CX goes under, but setting up a whole new airline in HK to replace CX will take time...I guess they haven't thought about that...

One change I'd like to see made - if you're in a framework where you can self-isolate at home, this should be changed.

Self isolation or quarantine at home - ONLY if everyone at home is double or triple vaccinated.

The existing vaccines don't give perfect protection against Omicron transmission even if triple-vaccinated (70% efficacy and only during weeks 2 to 10 after the third dose).

The only viable option for Zero-Covid is hotel quarantine. If they run out of willing staff they can always replace them with people from China.

Good enough and certainly better than no vaccines from my perspective. Even 10-20-30% efficacy is better than 0% as far as dancing queens are concerned.

Run them out of business and then buy them out at a bargain price is the strategy.

That’s the only change you’d like to see? Wow, easily pleased!
