dont understand why people are blaming the government for the elderly?

they had priority access to jabs for a year but declined.
younger people went out to get jabbed in the droves to do their bit for society, whilst the elderly held out because of selfish reasons.
it was about themselves for not getting the jab. now they are being hit and dying, they bear the consequences. where does personal responsibility come in?

fair they could have nudged quicker, or sent scarier messaging. but anyone who wanted a jab could get one, and that is a credence to the government

We have been through this umpteen times.

The messaging from the government was so negative, with so many warnings attached, that for a year nobody wanted to get vaccinated. Two of the contra-indications were high blood pressure and diabetes, which are classic old-age conditions. There was a good comparison with Singapore made on this forum a year ago, where HK had a list of "do not vaccinate if you have X" that was as long as your arm. Singapore had something like... 3 conditions.

This was completely contrary to other places, where the elderly were prioritised and also told to vaccinate regardless of supposedly (by HK standards) insurmountable conditions associated with old age.

The government also scared everyone with mixed messaging regarding Pfizer very early on, when they suddenly pulled it for 'packaging' problems. If this had been Sinovac, I suspect it would not have been pulled at all. Sinovac has repeatedly been pushed as the preferred vaccine here- it's been available earlier for adults, for kids, for the boosters, and it's been the vaccine of choice by high level government members.

Agree 100% with what jgl said. You only have to look at what other places said and did to see the massive failure of the Hong Kong authorities.

As I have said before, let the elderly test the Darwin theory. They should not burden the rest of the society..

But I feel the elderly is an excuse for the gov to do as they please.

As long as the govt at fault argument doesn't drift into 'the poor old folk, so confused and helpless' position - as it does seem to amongst bleeding heart types.

The govt (both HK and BJ) are at fault
The old twats are at fault
    Doctors are at fault
    Their families are at fault
Stupid Chinese culture is at fault.

The only way this argument has any further to run is if someone can be arsed to assign a percentage of fault to each group, but that really would be an argument to nowhere.

Suffice to say, we're all better than they are (and more alive) and that's exactly how things should be.

The civil servants have guaranteed jobs, unlike the rest of the city. You have to wonder how eager they are to "reopen" as them working from home = binge watching netflix and going on hikes. Most of the mid-senior level civil servants CANNOT bring work home as it is confidential.

They should all be told that due to the drop in tax revenue as a results of the depressed economy there will be a temporary 20% pay cut and another 20% will be sacked. Watch how quickly they come up with a reopening plan then.

You already stated they are enjoying the perks. What makes you think they will cut their own pay? You drunk?

HK v all the OECD countries would be an extreme outlier for the vaccination rates for the over 80's and you blame the Hong Kong public?

As a total off-topic aside, I do wish people would stop totally mis-using references to Darwinism or misunderstanding the point of the Darwin Awards... anyone in their 80s has already had ample chance to pass their genes into the pool, and it's not like they're still popping sprogs when laid up in the old age homes.

(So many posters have done this, not just the one I am quoting)
