Work in Central, where should I live?

I'll be working at IFC (IB job...) in Central.

Is it crazy not to live in Mid-levels or somewhere close, say within walking distance to IFC (with long hours at work and thus less commuting time preferable)?
Do many bankers live outside that area? If "majority" of them do, I would not want to live alone in other areas...

I'm looking for serviced apt...but serviced apts in mid-level seem more expensive.
Causeway bay seems not that far (about 15min by public transportation?) from Central. How is commuting from Causeway bay to Central?

    Please help!

What about Sheung Wan? Closer to Central but cheaper, and an easier commute than Causeway Bay.

Not all IBs live in Mid-Levels - the ones I know live on the south side of HK island - much longer commute but completely different living environment. They have families however.

If you work at IFC you can also look at Kowloon - the developments around Kowloon and Olympic station offer a wide range of possibilities (from top of the scale penthouses to reasonably priced smaller units) and are on the line that terminates under IFC (which is 5 minutes less walking than Central station) - easy commuting with less cost is possible and if you spend a night out at LKF then a taxi is not that expensive home in the wee small hours.

Lets start with a few simple questions.

    1) How long are prepared to commute to work?
    2) What is your budget?
    3) Do you like to live right in the city or not?

I don't know many people (if any) who mix with their neighbours. This is city apartment living - very few people even know their neighbours' names. Everyone lives "alone" and then socialises with whoever they want to, regardless of where they live - HK is compact. A typical group I meet with socially will have people who live in the Kowloon Tong area, Sai Wan Ho, Cheung Chau, Kennedy Town, Tung Chung, Discovery Bay and Sheung Wan. I also have friends in Sai Kung, Happy Valley, and Pok Fu Lam. I don't think I actually have any friends currently living near me in the mid-levels.

    thanks everyone!
if i should add to my orig. post, i prefer clean and smaller apt to old/dirty and larger unit. It's also one of the reasons I prefer serviced apt. "cleanness" is the key!

Hmm - to my way of thinking most of HKI and Kowloon is "right in the city" so perhaps a little more info than that! If you mean the nightclub/cafe district, then Soho/MidLevels; if you mean the shopping district then Causeway Bay or Mongkok (but I doubt either of those will fit your desire for a new, clean place!) - i still think you should take a look at the blocks above Elements - it's a brand new complex, pretty up market, nice shopping centre with a few restaurants and good transport links to IFC , airport, central, TST etc.

And you can get a place there for $18K?
